What's your style archetype?
A question that comes up often when I speak with clients, except it's reversed. Instead, a client or someone I know will often ask me, "What do you think my style is?" The list can go on regarding this curiosity: sporty, modern, preppy, minimalist, boho. You've probably seen the quizzes (or completed one or two) at some point.
The answer is always the same. Your style is unique to you. It doesn't fit into a neatly folded box. You can be three things at once or change it up from daytime to evening. Playing it safe can impede your most authentic expression.
As a human being, you're wired to seek approval. It's why trends in fashion work so well - some stick and others can be a flash in the pan. There is a fear within that's been further conditioned by our culture, instilling varying degrees of unease about what others will think of you. It can be conscious and subconscious and show up in odd uncorrelated behaviors.
The point is, you get to control that. You get to choose how to show up. It's that simple. Speaking with many clients, friends, and individuals in the corporate and non-profit consulting work I do, the common thread of dialogue remains: you have the power, the tools, confidence, and opportunity to paint your own personal style picture. It can be one image today and another image tomorrow.
