Saturday Styles: Underneath it All
No. 02 - The hidden layers that matter the most - womenswear edit
Hi there! Welcome to Saturday Styles, your weekly guide to practical, relevant, and sleek product recommendations. Here are my top picks this week based on what I’ve been loving for my clients and my closet.
SMOOTHING BRA
As someone who is fairly busty, this acts almost as a minimizer—to a degree. When I want to wear button-up shirts/dresses (which is often), this bra is my go-to. It allows for fitted support while also not feeling like I’m in a sports bra. It’s underwire-free, too. The best part is that it creates the smoothest underarm and back I’ve ever experienced with a bra. You know that pain point I’m referring to. Their fit predictor is accurate, IMO. Honeylove, Silhouette Bra $64.
COMFORTABLE SHAPEWEAR
Not all shapewear is created equal, nor is it the turnkey solution for wearing as a base layer, but this style = Spanx 2.0. These high-waisted shorts from Honeylove manage to cover more bases than others out in the market for a few reasons: they’re compression but not suctioning, the flexible boning keeps them from rolling over, and the ratio of waist to inseam strikes a good balance for a range of bodies. I wear these underneath knit dresses, slip skirts and trousers. True to size. Honeylove, No-Show High-Waist Short $89.
EVERYDAY THONG
This is a lightweight, perforated style that I’ve been wearing for years. They’re actually on final sale, and I can’t seem to fathom why, but they do run true to size and stretch to contour the body well (and return to their size after wash). Super lightweight with a good hold, I wear these underneath jeans daily. Spanx, Perforated Thong $10.
SMOOTHING SHORTS
These lightweight, breathable, barely sheer shorts are billed as the anti-chaffing shapewear. And that’s an accurate description. Solid choice underneath flowy dresses. They are not a replacement for the above shapewear shorts; they’re an alternative for when you don’t want to be compressed for smoothing, but instead, you want thigh protection and an added layer underneath in case it’s a windy day. Thighsociety, The Staple $39.
NO-SHOW SOCKS
The only no-show I wear or recommend. Thankfully someone realized that there was room in the market to improve on this technology. These are the standard staple cotton—women’s + men’s sizing available. They come in more colors, too. It’s made with a subtle rubberized backing to stay in place and sewn in a way that supports the whole sock from being pulled. I stocked up on these earlier in the summer and wear them with sneakers year-round. As a Millennial, I’m conditioned to embrace a lower-cut sock. ONDO, Organic Cotton No-Show Socks 4-Pack $48.
SOCKS FOR BOOTS & SNEAKERS
Boot season is almost here. These are a pricier sock, but they are worth the investment if you’re interested. Falke makes a luxe sock that performs well, and this is their marquee style, which I start wearing in October with all of my boots and booties. I have them in black and the lighter tan color that I wear with some of my light suede booties. A light-midweight cotton blend… doesn’t take up too much room inside the shoe; it also provides comfort and enough warmth during a seasonal fall-winter day. Falke, Sensitive London Cotton Blend Socks $26.
